I can bring something by, if you like? Since I'm the one imposing company on you and all.

I'll see you soon.

See you soon, Rosalind.
[An hour or so later, John knocks on her door. Standing back with a bag of takeaway until she opens her door to greet her. Holding it up to her with a smile as she does.]
Happy Christmas.

[She isn't the sort to go overboard on decorations, but there's a small miniature tree on one of the tables in the corner, so that's nice. The space is roomy, and there's two wineglasses set out, along with a bottle cooling in a bucket of ice.]
Chinese tonight? Good. That's rather a Christmas tradition. I thought we might try and play chess a bit, if you don't mind losing again.

A man can dream, I suppose.
[He waits until she's taken the bag from him before he wrestles a hand into his jacket and pulls out a small wrapped package that may or may not be a jewelry box from his pocket, offering her a softer smile as he does.]
And this is for you. You can open it now or later, I won't be offended either way.

[Though she's itching to open her gift now, she's more than enough patience to stop herself. Rosalind grabs a package off the kitchen counter, bulky but neatly wrapped.]
Go on. I won't feel greedy if I open mine if you open yourself.
[She waits only long enough to ensure he'll follow her lead before setting her nails to the tape and opening it. And--]
Oh.
[Oh, god, it's both beautiful and delightfully relevant, and Rosalind is smiling in delight as she runs her fingers over it.]

Of course, it's her reaction that has him smiling the widest. Leaning forward with his chin in his hand as he grins at her in return.]
Do you like it then? I had a feeling that you might. I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I thought of you immediately as soon as I saw it.

I'm flattered. Of course I like it, John, it's lovely. I assume it looks all right?
