The things we remember here, they're because it's who we really are.
The memories and the powers are ours.
But what if we're dead?
Do you think we could end up getting that back?

[There's a long pause.]

[Another pause.]

I think not, but that may just be wishful thinking.

Retrospec wouldn't be doing all this, restoring our worlds or whatever they're doing, if they were going to kill us.
Probably? I don't know anymore.

I'd say no, likely not-- only one person died this past month, which is nearly unbelievable when you take into account all that's happened.

But I would tell him, regardless. He has a right to know.

Yeah. It wouldn't make sense.

But I will. I try not to keep secrets from him. It wouldn't be right.

If he takes it poorly--

[And frankly, who wouldn't?]

--you can at the very least assure him he isn't the only one here who has remembered such a thing.

[What a stiff way to put it. It's almost as if she's trying to divorce herself from the emotion entirely.]

Oh. I had no idea.

[ He takes it super well, actually, but that's the kind of sad person Majima is.... ]

It's perfectly all right, though I appreciate the sentiment. But it's something I've grown to accept.

I guess we all die sometime.

Remembering it can't have been easy.

[There's a pause.]

It was a quick death. An explosion. I recall no pain.

[ He kinda feels like he keeps sticking his foot in his mouth, but that's our boy Kiryu for you. ]

[It really isn't, but that's not his fault. She pauses for a long few moments before adding:]

Truth be told, the person I was upset over wasn't myself. Odd, but I think you might understand the sentiment.

I wouldn't be this upset if I didn't care about him.

I heard it on the radio.
It was a news report about his death.

How did he die?

Some kind of accident.
The news report didn't specify.
I would guess it was some kind of hit.

[ Just being honest here... ]

[I mean. Probably. Still, the news turns her stomach.]

[He'd said he was upset, but . . .]

I'm angry at myself.

In my memory, I was turning my back on them.
On the yakuza.
I would have abandoned them if Majima hadn't died.

That doesn't seem right.

Why? That seems a perfectly rational action.

But it's not... honorable, I guess.
If I have the power to help them, I should have helped them.

[Hm.]

Let me see if I have this right.

You-- or this other you, anyway-- were once part of the yakuza. You and Majima both. You specifically don't know some of the things you did, but it's fair to assume you were involved in your fair share of nefarious activities. And at one point, you went to jail for a murder you didn't commit and let a murderer go free (was this on the orders of the yakuza, I wonder?)

And then you were going to leave them, but Majima died, likely because of activities relating to that lifestyle.

Have I got all that right?

[ Ah yes... she knows more about him than most people. He'd almost forgotten... ]

Why is it you're so compelled to help them? In your other life, you were compelled to leave them; in this life, you've no ties to them. They're nothing more than criminals, aren't they?

They feel like family.
And Majima is one of them.
